In a major setback to DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, the special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Friday rejected the bail plea of his daughter and Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi, accused in the Rs 1.77 lakhs crore 2G spectrum allocation scam.
The special CBI court also dismissed bail plea of Sharad Kumar, Managing Director and CEO of Kalaignar TV, in connection with the case.
Special CBI judge OP Saini, while observing that M Kanimozhi has been the active brain behind the 2G scam, said, “The bail plea dismissed.”
In wake of the special CBI court rejecting the bail plea, both Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharad Kumar are likely to be arrested by the CBI in connection with the 2G scam.
CBI had named Kanimozhi, daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi, and Sharad Kumar as co-conspirators in its April 25 supplementary chargesheet after it traced an illegal money trail of Rs.214 crore in the scam.
Ahead of the court order, Kanimozhi, clad in an orange salwar-kurta, looked calm and composed as she entered the Patiala House Court complex accompanied by her husband Aravindan.
The 2G spectrum scam relates to irregularities in the allocation of airwaves to telecom companies that caused huge losses to the exchequer.
DMK MP A. Raja is already in jail in connection with the case.
Among those were present in the court room were former telecom secretary Siddharth Behura, Swan Telecom promoter Shahid Balwa, Raja’s aide R.K. Chandolia, Vinod Goenka of Swan Telecom and Sanjay Chandra of Unitech.
Two officials of ADAG, Gautam Doshi and Hari Nair, who were also named in the chargesheet, were present in the court room.
Cineyug Film’s Karim Morani was not present as he got exemption from personal appearance due to his ill health, while Surendra Pipara of Reliance, who is in judicial custody, was not produced in the court room as he is undergoing treatment for a heart problem at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Kalaignar TV channel had earlier stated that the Rs.214 crore it got was a loan and paid back with interest.
