Malappuram: Adv. M Rahmathulla, CPI's national council member, has quit CPI and joined the Muslim League. Rahmathulla was formally inducted into the Muslim League by Pannakkad Hyderali Shihab Thangal. Rahmathulla said that he had faxed his resignation letter to the party leadership.
Fearing action by the party for the dismal performance of the party nominee from the Eranad constituency, it is learnt that Rahmathulla has decided to quit the party and join League. The CPI candidate from Ernad had only secured 2700 votes and placed fourth and an independent candidate had come second. There were also allegations that Rahmathulla had secretly tried to help the independent candidate. The party had sought a detailed explanation from Rahmathulla, who is in-charge of the party affairs, within a week.
Rahmathulla, who was CPI national councillor member, had contested the last Lok Sabha elections in Wayanad and was defeated. He is also the Housing Board chairman and leader of CPI's Malabar region.
