Tvm: Mentally challenged boy allegedly beaten up in school

Thiruvananthapuram, Saturday, April 30, 2011: A 15-year-old boy was brutally beaten up in a school for mentally-challenged children near Pangappara in Thiruvananthapuram. The boy has been identified as Rakesh, a student of C H Mohammed Koya Memorial school for the mentally challenged.

The boy, who sustain burn injuries and bruises in his body has been admitted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical college hospital, police told. The school staff identified as Bindu is said to have assaulted the boy.

The boy’s parents had noticed the burn marks in his genital areas and bruises when he returned home after school last Wednesday. The parents have filed a complaint in the Kazhakoottam police station in connection with this incident.

Meanwhile Education Minister MA Baby has asked the school Principal to submit a detailed report into the incident. Speaking to the mediapersons Minister added that the incident would be probed by the General Education Secretary, James Joseph.

Further action will be initiated after receiving the report, he added.

SJD leader K Krishnankutty lashes out at UDF

Kochi, Saturday, April 30, 2011: Socialist Janatha (Democratic) SJD leader K Krishnankutty today opined that he has ended relationship with the United Democratic Front (UDF). Speaking to the reporters here on Saturday, Krishnankutty said that this was his personal opinion.

During the Assembly elections UDF had earlier allotted the Chittoor seat to Socialist Janatha but later changed their decision, he added. Krishnankutty said the seat was promised to them by the UDF but was denied in the last moment since the All India Congress Committee (AICC) had decided to field all sitting MLAs.

Youth Congress activists had earlier staged protest march to the UDF meeting venue in Kochi. The protest march was held demanding the expulsion of Socialist Janatha leader K Krishnankutty from the United Democratic Front. The activists also shouted slogans against the leader.

The fight between Achuthan and Krishnankutty started when the Chittur seat was denied to the SJ(D).The Youth Congress alleged that Krishnankutty and his supporters had worked against K. Achuthan MLA, the UDF candidate in the Chittur Assembly constituency and also in other Assembly constituencies such as Nemmara, Kongad and Mannarkkad.

Anti-endosulfan hartal concludes on a jubilant mood

Thiruvananthapuram, Friday, April 29, 2011: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the CPI(M)-led LDF in Kerala demanding countrywide ban on the endosulfan pesticide threw life out of gear but passed off peacefully today.

The shut-down, which coincided with the final day of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants at Geneva, evoked a total response, reports said adding there were only minor incidents of stone pelting at banks.

As the hartal ended, the Left claimed victory for its anti-endosulfan campaign with the Stokholm Convention adopting a resolution to phase out the toxic pesticide.

LDF has been pressing the Centre to ban endosulfan which had allegedly caused over 400 deaths and serious health problems to nearly 4,000 people in parts of Kasargode in north Kerala, where the pesticide was sprayed in a state-run cashew plantation. Endosulfan was banned in the state in 2005.

Stockholm convention decides to ban endosulfan

Geneva, Friday 29 April 2011: Finally the call from Kasargod is heard by the world as the Stockholm convention has decided to ban endosulfan globally and agreed to list endosulfan in Annexure A with exemptions.

The efforts also assure that the Stockholm convention POP review committee will work with parties and observers to come up with alternatives.

Further it is also decided that the convention will provide financial assistance to the developing countries to replace endosulfan with alternatives, says independent observer from Kerala C Jayakumar.

India was completely isolated among other countries as when China also stood in support for conditional ban on the pesticide. Pointing at the report of Food and Agriculture Organization (FOA) that India claimed that endosulfan does not create any health problems.

But India suffered a major set back when FOA itself refuted the claims and stated that it is a hazardous pesticide.

The Contact Group is also preparing a work programme to address alternatives. India and some other nations had earlier raised issue of lack of alternatives and non-availability of technology at the convention.

MP Minister supports Kerala CM on Endosulfan ban  

New Delhi, Friday 29 April 2011: A Madhya Pradesh Minister has backed Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan’s demand for a countrywide ban on pesticide Endosulfan.

Madhya Pradesh Minister for Agriculture Dr Ramkrishna Kusmaria has also appealed to Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to ban it across the country. In a letter to the Kerala Chief Minister, Kusmaria has thanked him for taking a ‘timely step’ and urging the Centre to ban the controversial pesticide in Kerala.

Achuthanandan’s one-day fast is a strong gesture to convey his concern, the letter says. Kusumaria’s letter also requests the Centre to ban all toxic chemicals used in farming, reminding that Madhya Pradesh witnessed a disaster when a gas leak from pesticide-making plant of Union Carbide killed thousands of people in Bhopal in December 1984.

Anti-endosulfan hartal hits normal life in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, April 29: The dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the CPI(M)-led LDF in Kerala to step up pressure on the Centre for imposing a nation-wide ban on endosulfan pesticide hit normal life across the state today (April 29).

Public modes of transport like buses, taxis and autorickshaws were off the roads, reports from across the state said. Pro-Left unions in the transport sector have supported the hartal.

Attendance was thin in government offices and universities and Kerala Public Service Commission postponed the examinations slated for the day. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere, police said.

Shops, hotels and business establishments remained closed in most parts of the state.

The shut-down did not affect the train services but people who arrived at major stations by long-distance trains faced hardships due to the absence of city buses, taxis and autos.

The protest coincided with the last day of the current round of meeting of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants in Geneva, where the question of global ban on endosulfan has figured prominently.

The Left parties want India to join the nations pressing for the global ban of the pesticide.

Kerala has been pressing for a nation-wide ban on the pesticide, whose use over the years left scores dead and caused chronic health problems to many others in parts of Kasargode district.

Though the Congress in Kerala supported the demand for ban on endosulfan, the party has dubbed the LDF's hartal call a "political move" to cast the UPA Government in poor light.

Kerala Chief Minister and CPI(M) veteran V S Achuthanandan had yesterday written to his counterparts in other states seeking their support for the ban. The 87-year-old Marxist leader himself had led a day-long fast on the issue earlier this week.

Facebook crosses 25 million user mark in India

Gurgaon, Apr 29: The world's largest social networking website, Facebook, said on Thursday, Apr 28 that it crossed 25 million user mark in India. According to Facebook officials, Mark Zuckerberg's firm almost became the most popular social networking site in India.

Speaking at Ad:tech, the technology and advertising event held in Gurgaon, Facebook's vice-president of advertising and global operations, David Fischer, said "We are also looking forward to building strong relationship with India's strong network of developers and entrepreneurs who are increasingly harnessing Facebook to create unique sharing experiences on the social web."

David Fischer also revealed some traffic details of Facebook, which has more than 600 million active users around the globe. According to him, the average time spent by users on Facebook in India are three hours per month. Comparing with other websites like Google, which gets 1 hour 50 minutes, and YouTube with 1 hour 20 minutes per month in India, it is a huge achievement in less time.

He also mentioned enormous marketing opportunities offered by Facebook. Fischer noted brands like Times of India, The Economic Times, ESPNCricinfo, Pepsi and Aircel, which used Facebook as a marketing tool.

Sixty AI flights cancelled

New Delhi: Around 60 Air India flights were cancelled while several others delayed on the second day of the pilots' strike which continued despite the Delhi High Court directing them to return to work. In Delhi, 33 domestic and five international flights to Kathmandu, Kabul and Dubai were cancelled as the airline management decided to operate only those flights for which cabin crew as well as adequate pilots were available.

Similarly, unavailability of cockpit crew forced the national carrier to cancel around 19 flights, including two international ones, out of Mumbai.

"These cancellation have been done as per our contingency plan under which we had decided to operate only those flights for which pilots and cabin crew were available," an Air India official said.

To tide over the crisis, the national carrier has decided to rope in 150 management or executive pilots to operate the flights, the official said.

On Wednesday, at least 40 Air India flights were cancelled on the first day of the strike by its pilots causing enormous hardship to thousands of travellers. 

Demanding removal of Air India CMD and a CBI probe into the alleged mismanagement, 800-odd pilots belonging to the erstwhile Indian Airlines and owing allegiance to the Indian Commercial Pilots Association (ICPA) had gone on an indefinite strike from Tuesday midnight.

Taking a stern view of the stroke, Air India management sacked six ICPA leaders including President Capt A.S. Bhinder and General Secretary Capt Rishabh Kapur, derecognised the union and sealed their offices across the country. 

Also, the Delhi High Court asked the agitating pilots to call off their strike in "larger public interest".

The ICPA leaders said they may move Supreme Court Thursday after completing the legal consultations.

The report will be discussed tomorrow at meeting of the PAC which is likely to be stormy. With the strength of the two sides delicately balanced in the 21-member committee, the role of SP and BSP, which have a member each on the PAC, will be important. 

I respect SC verdict on PJ Thomas: PM

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today said he respected the Supreme Court verdict on the quashing of the appointment of PJ Thomas as Central Vigilance Commissioner. "I respect the Supreme Court verdict," he said when asked to comment on the apex Court judgement. Parliament sources said that a statement would be made on behalf of the government in both the Houses. A high-power committee, headed by the Prime Minister, had cleared the appointment of Thomas, the then union telecom secretary, to the Consitutional post. Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, a member of the three-member high-power committee, had made known her disagreement to the government proposal of appointing Thomas as CVC. Home Minister P Chidambaram is the other member. Dealing a big blow to the Central government, the Supreme Court struck down the appointment of Thomas as CVC, holding that the recommendation made by the high-powered panel did not consider the relevant material and, therefore, its advice "does not exist in law". 60-year-old Thomas, facing a corruption case in a state court relating to Palmolein import scam, resigned immediately after the apex Court gave its keenly awaited verdict, just six months after the former bureaucrat was appointed as the 14th CVC.

Students who have registered their mobile numbers at the IT@School web portal will get the results through SMS.

Highlighting the side-effects of using pesticides, Achuthanandan, in his letter, said over 400 people have died of Endosulfan in Kerala's Kasargode district in the last few years, while hundreds are suffering from various diseases.

The Kerala CM on Apr 25 had launched a day-long hunger strike here demanding a nationwide ban on Endosulfan pesticide.

Achuthanandan began the seven-hour long hunger strike from 10 am here with the participation of over 500 people from various walks of society.

The state ministers led similar protests in other parts of the state, including at Kasaragod where nearly 5000 people have been seriously affected by Endosulfan.

Achuthanandan hit out at the Centre for not banning Endosulfan even though its negative impact has been proven.

He said the Prime Minister has been ‘wrongly briefed’ by his colleagues on the effects of the pesticide.

“It was strange that the Centre adopted a stand that people in every state should be affected by the pesticide before considering a nationwide ban,” the chief minister said, referring to the Centre’s stand that more than one state must report the negative effect of Endosulfan to ban it.

Kerala, which has already banned the pesticide, has been demanding a nationwide ban on it.

SSLC EXAMINATION RESULT

SSLC pass percentage 91.37%

Thiruvananthapuram, Thursday, April 28, 2011: As many as 4,18,967 (91.37 per cent) students of the 4.58 lakh candidates who appeared for the SSLC examination in March, 2011, have qualified for higher education. Education Minister M.A. Baby who announced the results here on Thursday said this year’s pass percentage was higher than last year’s 90.72 percent.

Among the winners, 5,821 students have got A+ grade for all subjects and 18,823 candidates got A grade. Kottayam district tops the table with 97.02 pass percentage, while Thiruvananthapuram is in the last position with 85.93 pass percentage.

29 schools have acquired 100 percent pass percentage, Minister said. The pass percentage registered in the Scheduled Caste is 82.25% and 80.94 % in Scheduled Tribes.

Application forms for plus two admissions will be distributed from May 4. The minister said from this year onwards single window facility will be arranged for VHSE.

Thiruvananthapuram: Seeking to widen his government's campaign against Endosulfan, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has written to his counterparts in other states requesting them to bring combined pressure on the Centre to impose a nationwide ban on the pesticide. Ahead of a Kerala 'hartal' tomorrow called by ruling CPI(M)-led LDF on the Endosulfan issue, Achuthanandan, in his letter, highlighted the ill-effects due to use of the pesticide over the years in Kerala's Kasargode district where over 400 people died and hundreds were suffering from serious health problems.He also attached copies of reports of studies on the death and environmental devastation caused by Endosulfan spraying over the years in a state-run cashew estate in Kasargode. The 87-year-old CPI-M leader, who recently observed a day-long fast on the issue, wanted his counterparts to prevail upon the Centre to ask for global ban on Endosulfan at the ongoing Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants.

Realising the grim danger posed by the pesticide to living beings and nature, it had been banned by 80 countries but the UPA Government at the Centre was still reluctant to take action, Achuthanandan said. He said there was no need for further studies to establish the grievous consequences of Endosulfan as the experience of Kerala had sufficiently brought out that aspect. An all-party delegation from Kerala had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently to press the demand for ban of Endosulfan.

LDF hartal: Exams on Friday put off  

Kochi, Thursday, April 28, 2011: The Mahatma Gandhi, Cochin, Sankara, Calicut and Kannur universities have postponed the examinations scheduled on the hartal day on Friday (April 29).

The Directorate of Technical Education too has postponed all its exams on the day. The revised dates need to be obtained by the candidates from the respective institutions under the Directorate of Technical Education.

The Kerala University has so far not postponed its exams. The hartal has been called by the Left Democratic Front seeking a ban on endosulfan.

All examinations of MG University previously scheduled on April 29 have been postponed and shall be conducted on April 30.

ഡബിള്‍സ്, ഉറുമി, ആഗസ്റ്റ്  15, മേക്കപ്പ് മാന്‍, ക്രിസ്ത്യന്‍ ബ്രദേഴ്‌സ്, റേസ്, കുടുംബശ്രീ ട്രാവല്‍സ്, ബെസ്റ്റ് ആക്ടര്‍ എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഈ വര്‍ഷമിറങ്ങിയ ഒട്ടു മിക്ക ചിത്രങ്ങളും ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റില്‍ സുലഭമാണ്. പണ്ടേപ്പോലെ ഇരുട്ടുമൂടിയ ക്യാമറ പ്രിന്റുകളൊന്നുമല്ല നെറ്റില്‍ ഡൗണ്‍ലോഡിന് കിട്ടുന്നതെന്ന് വേറൊരു സത്യം. നല്ല വ്യക്തതയുള്ള ചിത്രവും ശബ്ദവുമുള്ള പ്രിന്റുകളാണ് ഡൗണ്‍ലോഡിങിന് കിട്ടുന്നത്. ഇത്തരം പ്രിന്റുകള്‍ ലഭിയ്ക്കുന്നവര്‍ പിന്നീട് ഒറിജിനല്‍ സിഡി ഇറങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ വാങ്ങാന്‍ താത്പര്യവും കാണിയ്ക്കാറില്ല.

വ്യാജസിഡിയ്‌ക്കെതിരെ പൊരുതിയ മലയാള സിനിമ ഇനി പൊരുതേണ്ടത് നെറ്റിലെ വീഡിയോ പൈറസിയ്‌ക്കെതിരെയാണന്ന് വ്യക്തമായി കഴിഞ്ഞു. ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റിലെ ഒരു ഡസനോളം സൈറ്റുകളില്‍ മലയാള സിനിമകള്‍ ഡൗണ്‍ലോഡിങിന് കിട്ടുന്നതായാണ് പൊലീസിന്റെ കണ്ടെത്തില്‍. എന്നാല്‍ യഥാര്‍ഥത്തില്‍ ഇതിലുമേറെയാണ് മൂവി ഡൗണ്‍ലോഡിങ് സൈറ്റുകളുടെ എണ്ണം. കോടികള്‍ മുടക്കി നിര്‍മ്മിച്ച 'ഉറുമി എട്ടു സൈറ്റുകളില്‍ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നു. ഇത് പൊലീസ് ഇടപെട്ട് നീക്കിയതിനു പിന്നാലെ ഏറ്റവുമൊടുവില്‍, ഓസ്‌ട്രേലിയ കേന്ദ്രമായുള്ള മറ്റൊരു സൈറ്റിലും 'ഉറുമി പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടതായി കണ്ടെത്തി. ഇങ്ങനെ നെറ്റിലെ വീഡിയോ പൈറസ് വന്‍വെല്ലുവിളിയാണ് ഉയര്‍ത്തുന്നതെന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ സംശയമില്ല.


ജനത്തെ വേണ്ടവിധത്തില്‍ ബോധവത്ക്കരിയ്ക്കുകയും ഡൗണ്‍ലോഡിങിന്റെ അപകടങ്ങള്‍ അവരെ പറഞ്ഞുമനസ്സിലാക്കിയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തില്ലെങ്കില്‍ മലയാള സിനിമ പ്രതിസന്ധിയിലേക്ക് നീങ്ങുമെന്ന കാര്യത്തില്‍ സംശയമില്ല. തിയറ്ററുകളിലേക്ക് പ്രേക്ഷകരെ ആകര്‍ഷിയ്ക്കുന്ന വിധത്തില്‍ സൗകര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുക്കുക, വിദേശരാജ്യങ്ങളിലെപ്പോലെ സിനിമ റിലീസ് ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ ഇന്റര്‍നെറ്റില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശന സൗകര്യവുമൊരുക്കി വെല്ലുവിളി നേരിടാന്‍ സിനിമാരംഗം തയാറാവണം

കൈരളി ടി.വി.യുടെ പുതിയ മേധാവികളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു

തിരുവനന്തപുരം: സി.പി.എം. അനുകൂല ചാനലായ കൈരളി ടി.വി.യുടെ പുതിയ മേധാവികളെ ഡയറക്ടര്‍ ബോര്‍ഡ് യോഗം തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. ടി.ആര്‍.അജയനാണ് പുതിയ എക്‌സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് ഡയറക്ടര്‍. ചീഫ് ഓപ്പറേറ്റിംഗ് ഓഫീസറായി എന്‍. വെങ്കട്ടരാമനെയും ന്യൂസ് ഡയറക്ടറായി എന്‍.പി.ചന്ദ്രശേഖറെയും തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തു. മാനേജിങ് ഡയറക്ടര്‍ ജോണ്‍ ബ്രിട്ടാസ് രാജിവെച്ചതിനെ തുടര്‍ന്നാണ് പുതിയ മേധാവികളെ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്തത്.

പണപ്പെരുപ്പം ഇന്ത്യക്കാരെ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിലാഴ്ത്തും: എഡിബി

ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: ഉയരുന്ന ഭക്ഷ്യ വിലപ്പെരുപ്പവും ഇന്ധന വിലപ്പെരുപ്പവും ഇന്ത്യയ്ക്ക് വന്‍ ഭീഷണിയുയര്‍ത്തുമെന്ന് ഏഷ്യന്‍ വികസന ബാങ്ക് (എ.ഡി.ബി). ഉയരുന്ന ഭക്ഷ്യ വിലപ്പെരുപ്പം നല്ലൊരു ശതമാനം ജനവിഭാഗത്തെ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിലാഴ്ത്തിയേക്കുമെന്നാണ് ബാങ്ക് നടത്തിയ പഠനം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നത്. 

ഭക്ഷ്യ വിലപ്പെരുപ്പത്തിലെ പത്ത് ശതമാനം വര്‍ധന മൂന്ന് കോടി ഇന്ത്യക്കാരെ ദാരിദ്ര്യരേഖക്ക് താഴെയെത്തിക്കുമെന്നും എഡിബി വിലയിരുത്തുന്നു. പണപ്പെരുപ്പം കുറയ്ക്കുന്നതിനായി ആവുന്നതെല്ലാം ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ടെന്ന് കേന്ദ്ര ധനകാര്യ മന്ത്രി പ്രണാബ് മുഖര്‍ജി ഇതിനോട് പ്രതികരിച്ചു. എ.ഡി.ബി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് സംബന്ധിച്ചുള്ള ഇന്ത്യയുടെ പ്രതികരണം ബാങ്കിന്റെ അടുത്ത വാര്‍ഷിക സമ്മേളനത്തില്‍ അറിയിക്കുമെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു. 

ഇന്ത്യയെപ്പോലെ മിക്ക ഏഷ്യന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങളും പണപ്പെരുപ്പ ഭീഷണിയിലാണ്. 2011ലെ ആദ്യ രണ്ട് മാസങ്ങളില്‍ ഏഷ്യയുടെ ആഭ്യന്തര ഭക്ഷ്യ വിലപ്പെരുപ്പത്തിലെ ശരാശരി വളര്‍ച്ച പത്ത് ശതമാനമാണ്. അതേസമയം, ആഗോള വിലപ്പെരുപ്പം 30 ശതമാനവും. ഭക്ഷ്യ വിലപ്പെരുപ്പത്തിലുണ്ടാവുന്ന പത്ത് ശതമാനം വര്‍ധന ഏഷ്യയില്‍ 6.4 കോടി പേരെ ദാരിദ്ര്യരേഖയ്ക്ക് താഴെയെത്തിക്കുമെന്നാണ് പഠനം വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നത്. 

ഭക്ഷ്യ വിലപ്പെരുപ്പത്തിലെ വര്‍ധന വേണ്ട രീതിയില്‍ പരിഗണിച്ചില്ലെങ്കില്‍ ദാരിദ്ര്യനിര്‍മാര്‍ജനത്തില്‍ ഏഷ്യന്‍ രാജ്യങ്ങള്‍ അടുത്തിടെയുണ്ടാക്കിയ പുരോഗതി നഷ്ടപ്പെടുമെന്നും ബാങ്ക് ഓര്‍മിപ്പിച്ചു. ഉയരുന്ന പണപ്പെരുപ്പം വളര്‍ച്ചയെ ബാധിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയതായി സാമ്പത്തിക മേഖലയിലെ വിദഗ്ധരും അഭിപ്രായപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. 2011-12 വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ രാജ്യത്തിന്റെ മൊത്ത ആഭ്യന്തര ഉത്പാദനം നേരത്തേ പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചിരുന്ന 8.6 ശതമാനത്തിലും താഴെയായിരിക്കുമെന്ന് ക്രെഡിറ്റ് റേറ്റിങ് ഏജന്‍സിയായ ക്രിസിലിലെ മുതിര്‍ന്ന സാമ്പത്തിക വിദഗ്ധന്‍ സുനില്‍ സിന്‍ഹ അഭിപ്രായപ്പെട്ടു. 

മാര്‍ച്ചില്‍ പണപ്പെരുപ്പം അടിസ്ഥാനപ്പെടുത്തിയുള്ള മൊത്ത വില സൂചിക 8.9 ശതമാനത്തിലെത്തി നില്‍ക്കുകയാണ്.
